The purpose of this blog is not to shit on traditional weddings but is to open your mind to a different possibility and remind you to be more intentional with your day.

ELOPEMENT“: AN ALTERNATIVE WAY TO GET MARRIED FOR COUPLES WHO ARE LOOKING FOR AN INTIMATE WEDDING EXPERIENCE; WHERE THE FOCUS OF THE DAY IS ABOUT THE TWO OF YOU.

DISCLAIMER!

It is not for everyone! Some couples value family, and a big celebration, and that’s totally OK! But for those couples who really want to have the intimacy, don’t want to deal with the stress of hosting a big wedding, and want something unique that represents their relationship, elopement could be a great alternative for you!

An elopement can be anything from just the two of you to 25-30 people of your closet friends and family. But remember, It’s about you two first!

So Should You Elope?

If any of these reasons appeal to you, you might want to consider an elopement over a traditional wedding.

ELOPEMENT MIGHT BE FOR YOU IF…

1) YOU’RE LOOKING FOR AN INTIMATE, “JUST US” EXPERIENCE

Does the idea of spending a lot of money, making tons of decisions, and planning a big wedding stress you out?

It isn’t anybody’s fault, it’s the nature of big traditional weddings that makes it harder for couples to have intimate moments and focus on each other. There is a lot of pressure and obligation that comes with traditional weddings. Some couples do not like the idea of spending time putting on a show and greeting hundreds of people.

Some couples would rather focus on the love and connection they have for each other on their wedding day.

When you elope, you don’t have to worry about others’ opinions or expectations. Instead, you can create an experience that appeals to both of you, and that celebrates your love in your own way, without someone else’s input on how you ‘should’ do it.

You can create your own traditions, like planting a tree on top of the mountain to symbolize the start of your love and progression of growth in the years to come.

You get to authentically celebrate your love instead of fitting yourselves into the expectations of the wedding industry. Maybe following the traditional route isn’t for you, and that’s totally okay! Everyone is different, and has different needs and wants.

Look,

It doesn’t have to be just the two of you. You can invite all your closest friends and family and call it an elopement!

2) THE MONEY

According to The Knot

“Americans spend $33,391 on average for their weddings”

That’s pretty crazy!!

Elopement is not a cheaper way to get married!! BUT, because you aren’t inviting 100+ guests and reserving an expensive venue, you don’t have to feed 100+ people, you don’t need to pay for a party bus, you don’t have to worry about the decor, the flowers, the cake…. All these things add up.

People who elope still spend an average of $10,000 on their elopement. However, the amount of money goes toward experience over things.

Now if those things are very important to you and genuinely make you happy, then there’s nothing wrong with that. However, if you don’t want to spend a ton of money on things that you don’t really care about… then consider elopement!

If you decide to elope, your main cost of the wedding will just be traveling and the photographer! You will have money saved up for your honeymoon or hire a very good photographer for your elopement! *wink

3) LESS DRAMA AND STRESS.

Planning a traditional wedding can be very stressful. Selecting your bridesmaids, creating a timeline, holding rehearsals, and inviting hundreds of guests can easily take away the attention from the two of you. Most people are not wedding planners-they’re not prepared for this big of an event.

Or even worse…. What if you have a complicated family situation? Some couples don’t have family that supports their relationship, and that’s not your fault; it’s totally OK. Having a traditional wedding can be even more stressful for you two.

Let me tell you something…

No one has the right to be at your wedding; it’s a privilege

Let me be personal with you… I don’t have the greatest family relationship. One of my family members is un-supportive with the relationship that I have with my wife. I wish I eloped for my wedding to make the experience more about us and our love.

But that’s not everyone’s situation…

Some couples have great relationships with their family but still want to elope because they don’t want to have hundreds of guests taking away the intimacy. So instead, they have a very small destination wedding with just them and less than 25 guests. Plus, it saves them tens of thousands of dollars!

4) THE ENVIRONMENT

Have you ever thought about how much trash a typical wedding creates? According to the Huffpost,

“During those six hours, a wedding produces roughly 400-600 lbs. of waste — that’s based on a guest list of roughly 100-120 people”

This is a sad reality. And it’s not like every couple who hosts a big wedding is conscious about this. Think about it, 100 people traveling from all over the place to one tiny location costs a lot of fuel.

If the environment is something that is very important to you, then elopement is certainly the most environmentally friendly way to get married. Not only that, you get to be seen as a hero in mother nature’s eyes. You get to experience nature at its finest!

5) WANT SOMETHING ADVENTUROUS AND UNIQUE

Some couples want to start their relationship off with a BANG! They feel that going on epic adventures together will strengthen their bond and create an unforgettable experience.

The best part is, it can be whatever you want it to be! If both of you like climbing, you both can climb to the top of Yosemite and have a ceremony there. The possibilities are endless! You guys get to enjoy doing things together as a couple instead of greeting 100+ guests and barely having time to catch up with any of them. This deep, adventurous experience will strengthen the bonds you two have as couple.
